Road running shoes with plenty of cushioning. Model comparison!
Cushioning is usually associated with comfort and softness. It has its supporters, but there are also opponents who try to convince you that it does more harm than good. Who's right? Does everyone need depreciation?
The most important thing about running shoes is an INDIVIDUAL fit, both to our physical conditions, our sports experience (or lack thereof), and the purposes for which the shoe is to be used. Shoes with cushioning are not speed demons, they will not work during faster accents.
Shoes with high cushioning is a category that, despite the passage of time, does not lose its importance. For a moment, she was heavily criticized when there was a temporary fashion for natural running. However, it soon turned out that it is not for everyone. Every day, a sedentary lifestyle, or not necessarily a rich training experience, means that our bodies are not ready to take on greater loads.
The most important feature of cushioning is the ability to absorb the impact force when the foot is in contact with the ground. This is possible by using different foams. Today, each brand has its flagship technology. Cushioning plays a key role when running on paved surfaces, especially among beginner runners or overweight people, or simply preferring comfort to cover the next kilometers. It allows you to protect muscles and tendons against overloads, often caused by monotonous movement or lack of running technique.
What models to look at? Below we present models characterized by a very high level of depreciation.

Model overview
adidas Ultraboost 22
Ultraboost has been a valued model in the adidas brand offer for years. From the beginning, it combined the most advanced technologies of the German manufacturer with a unique look, which is also great for everyday wear. It is valued above all for comfort.
The well-known Boost foam, which has revolutionized the approach to cushioning in running shoes, is invariably responsible for protection. The torsion system of the shoe is not missing . The new adidas LEP ("Linear Energy Push") provides a 15% increase in forefoot flexion stiffness for a more responsive stride. The Stretchweb outsole with Continental™ Rubber provides grip in dry and wet conditions.
The upper in Primeknit + technology, together with a special flexible cage in the midfoot area, pleasantly wraps the foot and provides secure hold. Concerned about the environment, it was made of Primeblue, a durable fabric, partially made using Parley Ocean Plastic.
What is the key change in the 22nd edition, however, is the design of the women's version, which is significantly different from the men's. It has a softer heel, a lower instep, and better stability, better suited to a woman's stride. This was achieved thanks to changes in the outsole in the medial part, where there were previously holes, now there are no holes. This prevents excessive work of the Boost sole in the midfoot area and thus excessive pronation.
At the same time, the visible holes on the heel have been slightly enlarged, they are also longer than in the men's shoe due to the differences in the aforementioned women's gait. As the foot lands, these holes kind of allow the midsole to expand and stretch into them. This makes for a softer landing.

Asics Gel-Nimbus 24
Asics Nimbus has gained a reputation as the king of long distances over the years. It first appeared in Europe in 1999. It belongs to the group of brand products referred to as - "I move Further", i.e. a line of shoes focusing on ensuring the greatest possible comfort while covering the next kilometers.
In the latest version, the weight of the shoe has been reduced. This is the result of The use of the new FF BLAST™+ foam in the sole , the Gel technology on the heel and in the forefoot with different densities was also used invariably. This construction provides an even softer feeling in the landing phase and at the same time a more energetic take-off.
The upper uses a soft, specially designed mesh for comfort and breathability. A flexible midfoot panel hugs your foot for greater flexibility.
The outsole uses ASICS LITE rubber, which is lighter and stronger than standard outsole materials.
The women's and men's models have different drops, 10 and 13 mm respectively. As the brand's research has shown, women often have a shorter Achilles tendon. A higher drop makes it work in a smaller range and is less loaded.

Asics Gel-Kayano 29
Gel-Kayano is one of the flagship models of the Asics brand, which has become a kind of symbol of safety for runners. Perfect for those looking for a shoe with a high level of cushioning and support. In the offer of Asics products, it is placed, like Nimbus, in the "I move Further" category, i.e. in the line of products focusing on ensuring the greatest possible comfort while covering long distances. Unlike the Nimbus Kayano model, it is a model designed for runners with an overpronating foot. At the same time, it is a shoe with history, written for nearly thirty years.
In the latest installment, designers have changed the midsole, which still provides maximum cushioning, but is now lighter and more dynamic. This was achieved thanks to the use of FF BLAST PLUS foam. There is also a flagship technology - GEL. The new LITETRUSS technology improves its stability, it uses the sole construction and geometry of the shoe to provide stability instead of stiffer posts or plastic arches.
The stretchy upper ensures a perfect fit and breathability, and the proven AHARPLUS™ rubber is responsible for traction.

Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit 3
Nike React Infinity Run is a model that is distinguished primarily by the brand's new approach to the aspect of stabilization in the case of people with a tendency to excessive overpronation. It was decided to improve, not by controlling movement using, for example, harder foam (as is the case in the "classic" approach), but as a result of widening the midsole. This is an element that immediately catches the eye.
A study conducted by the British Columbia Sports Medicine Research Foundation (BCSMRF) found that runners in the Nike React Infinity had a 52% lower overload rate than in the motion control shoe, and users confirmed that they experienced less knee and foot pain.
The latest, 3rd edition of the Nike React Infinity Run continues this philosophy, but has undergone minor changes that improve the comfort of use. It is still a model that will work for beginner runners or those looking for shoes for everyday training, both with a neutral type of foot and those looking for stability.
Updated e.g. Flyknit upper, which now provides better support in the toe area, and also provides better breathability in areas such as the front part of the upper (toe-tongue) and midfoot. It was also decided to add Nike Flywire bindings that increase support and the collar has also been updated, it is now softer and better grip.
The model's signature Nike React foam and lightweight cradle shape remain, which provides support during every phase of the run. At the same time, as the brand adds - less material between the sockliner and midsole means that the foot is closer to the foam. This allows you to improve the dynamics of running. The sole itself in appearance has a structure with dimples. Deeper portions indicate more cushioning areas, while shallower portions provide more rigidity.

Nike React Miler 2
React Miller is another of the cushioned running shoes from Nike. The React Miler has a slightly widened front, but it is primarily intended to provide comfort when covering long distances, unlike the already mentioned React Infinity Run Flyknit 2 (which has a much wider base). Miler also has cushioning based on Nike React foam. However, more of it has been used, making it even softer.
The shape of the heel was designed based on the data of runners. In the second installment, the upper has changed. Lighter material and numerous perforations improve breathability. A special clip surrounding the heel is responsible for a better and more stable heel hold.
The Miler outsole has been divided into 5 separate areas. It has been reinforced with elements made of durable rubber,

Nike ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit 2
The ZoomX Invincible Run Flyknit was the first training shoe to feature a full-length ZoomX foam midsole. Previously reserved mainly for racing models such as Vaporfly Next% and Alphafly Next% .
ZoomX Invincible from the beginning seems to be a combination of models: React Infinity, React Miler and Vaporfly Next%. Unlike the latter, it focuses on stability and fluidity during everyday training, especially during long distances, e.g. in preparation for the marathon. There's no carbon plate for responsiveness, but like the Infinity, it has a special geometry that creates a smooth heel-to-toe transition. It's more of a training complement to the fastest models in the Nike range.
The Invincible's unique design allowed designers to add even more ZoomX foam, making it 33% softer while providing more energy return than the Infinity Run. In addition, the model uses a Flyknit upper and a rubber sole responsible for good grip and durability.
As for the sole construction itself, the brand points out that in 2020 it conducted similar research to those mentioned for the Infinity model conducted by BCSMRF. This time with the participation of over 300 athletes, and the models were analyzed: both the first and second edition of Infinity Run and Invincible. It turned out that between the three models in terms of protection and traffic control, the results obtained were the same.
The 2nd edition of the model has gained an improved upper that provides greater breathability and durability.

Nike Air Zoom Vomero 16
Nike Air Zoom Vomero is less known than the iconic Nike Air Zoom Pegasus, but it is a model of shoes created for people who appreciate a high level of cushioning, which will work with more weight or when covering long distances.
The latest version uses ZoomX foam, already mentioned on the occasion of Invincible, which provides greater dynamics and cushioning. In the case of the Vomero, it is placed only under the heel for better energy return. In the front part, we find the well-known Air Zoom gas cushion, which has been twice as large since the previous edition, thanks to which it provides even better cushioning.
The upper has changed. Thanks to the placement of perforations in key elements, it has gained breathability. In addition, the improved tongue is now softer (more padding has been used). The new design of the collar is also responsible for better adhesion, together with the new strap on the arch of the foot, it guarantees comfort and fit. essential during daily training.

Brooks Glycerin 20
Brooks Glycerin debuted in 2002, and comfort soon became its hallmark. This is a model created for people looking for a very well-cushioned shoe for running on paved surfaces, both during long runs and everyday training. Softness is its main characteristic. This includes it is also appreciated by the spectacular 2018 Boston Marathon winner, Des Linden.
The 20th edition brings big changes to the midsole. DNA LOFTv3 foam is used, which is softer, lighter and more responsive than its DNA LOFT predecessor. Created using nitrogen infusion technology, the previous edition of DNA LOFT was a derivative of EVA foam, combined with rubber and air, now comes nitrogen, which "changes the rules of the game".
The softness of the model applies not only to the sole. A lined interior, along with a mesh upper with 3D Fit Print overlays, provides a comfortable and flexible fit. Comfort is enhanced by a padded heel collar. The model uses flatter laces that provide a personalized fit. There is no shortage of space for fingers.

Brooks Glycerin GTS 20
Brooks Glycerin GTS replaced the previously known Transcend model, present on the market since 2013. The GTS add-on stands for "Go-To-Support". Thus, it is a model that will work both for runners who need support on a daily basis during long runs, as well as those struggling with fatigue pronation
It is distinguished by the use of GuideRails technology. It is an intelligent support system that stabilizes torsional movements of the heel with the help of an internal splint and limits excessive rotation of knee movements with the help of an external splint. The brand compares the operation of the system to the board on a bowling alley, where the foot is a ball. And just like on the track, the rail, like the band, only works when necessary.
The sole is based on full-size DNA LOFTv3 foam created using nitrogen diffusion technology. The use of a new rubber in the outer sole allowed to improve grip, while reducing the weight of the shoe. Flexible upper made using 3D Fit Print technology, ensures fit and breathability.

Mizuno Wave Sky 5
Wave Sky is a kind of "hovercraft" in the offer of the Japanese brand Mizuno. Designed for people looking for shoes for long runs or slightly heavier runners. The 5th edition, like its predecessor, has cushioning based on the latest brand technology - Mizuno Enerzy. In the latest edition, however, we will no longer find the brand's signature Wave plate, but Foam Wave, which adds stability to the soft midsole and improves energy return. The new MIZUNO ENERZY CORE used in the upper part of the sole works with MIZUNO ENERZY to create a soft cushioning along the entire length, in the heel and in the midfoot.
The drop has also been reduced from 10mm to 8mm.
The model uses a new version of the Smooth Stretch Woven upper. It is smoother to the touch than previously used materials and has a denser weave, but at the same time it has special holes to improve breathability. It was made of recycled materials. The upper provides more space in the toe area.

Hoka One One Clifton 8
The Hoka brand is known for its oversized constructions. The Clifton model is the flagship model of the brand, designed for asphalt runs (although the offer includes an even more cushioned Bondi). From the very beginning, it combined comfort and lightness in a sophisticated way. Cushioning is based on compressed EVA foam. Only the latest version uses a 15% lighter version of the foam, which guarantees a greater feeling of softness compared to its predecessor. Extended sole in the heel area provides a soft landing.
The sole is shaped in a characteristic cradle shape, allowing a smooth transition between successive phases of rolling while running, improving the fluidity of movement. The Clifton has a wider front, allowing the toes to fit naturally inside the shoe, while also improving comfort when covering long distances. In this edition, the upper has changed, which provides greater comfort and fit. In addition, a low, 5 mm drop ensures the natural positioning of the foot while running.
The updated rubber outsole uses a lightweight yet grippy Hi-Abrasion rubber that has been strategically placed.

Hoka Bondi 8
The Bondi model focuses on even greater comfort than the Clifton mentioned above. This is the best cushioned model for running on paved surfaces in the Hoki brand offer. The 8th edition features an updated sole. The elongated back of the heel is responsible for a smoother transition from heel to toe. At the same time, a new, more resilient foam is used in the midsole. The signature Meta-Rocker Geometry cradle is not missing .
The outer sole has been adapted for running on hard surfaces such as asphalt. It has special sections of adhesive, durable rubber that increase abrasion resistance. Its design allows full contact with the ground along the entire length of the rollover. It guarantees the certainty of movement and excellent grip on the road.
Revised jacquard upper offers more breathability.

New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v12
New Balance 1080 appeared on the market in 2010, setting a new level in the premium cushioning category of the American brand. The latest 12th edition has undergone significant changes. She gained a new comfort thanks to the suggestions of runners. At the same time, the weight was reduced by about 30 g compared to its predecessor.
The flagship technology - Fresh Foam X foam is responsible for cushioning, but it has been better adapted to individual pressure areas. Its design is based on collected data on pressure mapping and foot impact of runners. The use of precise lasering allowed for more intelligent depreciation. At the same time, the foam is characterized by high elasticity and resistance to deformation.
The upper is also the already known flagship Hypoknit material. Soft, breathable, providing support and breathability. It guarantees a precise fit to the foot in the middle part, i.e. where it is necessary, and at the same time space and flexibility in the forefoot. It is a good combination of breathability and support. Perforations have changed slightly to improve breathability.
What is crucial is the change of the heel counter. The brand listened to users' suggestions, removed the stiff element from the 11th edition and returned to a more classic heel counter with a padded collar, providing better support and comfort. The soft tongue also improves comfort. Checked, flat shoelaces remained.

Cloudmonster is a completely new proposition in the On Running brand offer, awarded with the ISPO Award 2022. The model was created to ensure the greatest possible comfort when traveling long distances.
It is distinguished by the construction of the midsole. Clouds made of soft Helion foam, characteristic of the Swiss brand, were retained, but they took on a more oversized character. They consistently provide horizontal and vertical cushioning.
At the same time, the Speedboard® plate and the cradle structure improve running dynamics. Additional comfort is also guaranteed by a soft insole and an upper partly made of recycled materials. More than 80% of the polyester used and more than 30% of the entire shoe are made from recycled materials.
